StarTeam
Hi.
We are about to move to StarTeam from various other solutions and I am
concerned about IntelliJ StarTeam support.
For example, there is this bug still open from Ariadna days:
http://www.intellij.net/tracker/idea/viewSCR?publicId=6473
I have also talked with the person managing the move to StarTeam and she was
concerned about the quality of the StarTeam integration after she tested it
with various Aurora builds.
Users - Do you have anything to add on this subject?
JetBrains - What is going to be fixed in IntelliJ 4.0?
Thanks,
Amnon I. Govrin

We have not changed much in StarTeam integration since Ariadna release and
hope nothing has been broken in it since that moment (everyone who uses IDEA
with StarTeam is welcome to report problems).
During developmemt of Ariadna our IDEA development team used StarTeam as
version control system and we were pretty happy with our integration with
it. When we started Aurora development we switched to CVS (just for better
testing of our CVS integration) and so could not encounter any problems with
StarTeam integration outself but I cannot remember any serious problem with
it to be reported.

What about the lingering bug from Ariadna?

Amnon,
We've been using Starteam for years. It's windows client is very good and I
prefer it over integration.
On reason is that I want to see what people checked in since my last
checkout.
See what they changed, review their code as team lead sometimes or just to
see what's going on
I do not think you can do it with integration
You might find out that the integration is not that important after all

But it's not a bug - it's marked as feature. I wouild even say 2 different
features in one request. Which one of these 2 features is more important for
you?

Hi.
Here's what the StarTeam people replied:
The problem we've encountered is the first one: checked in files are still
writable. This is a bug, since this behavior is different from the usual
behavior of the StarTeam client.

Same here. We use Starteam, I tried to use IDEA built-in support for
Starteam but found it too limited in features and somewhat different in use.
In Starteam client I can check in/check out files one by one, add memo text,
assign closed CRs, add links etc. IDEA seem to check in all updated files
together, that is now what I want. At least I did not find out (I tried only
twice) how to check in only one single file. By the way, when I check it a
file to VCS, does IDEA clear local VCS for that file?
I do not need integrated support for any VCS. It is easier to use the client
provied by Starteam or Perforce or Microsoft. More features and everyone
knows how to use it.
I do not mind having another app running, I have enough memory and I always
have at least 10 windows opened simultaneously. I do not care for total
integration of everything into one product. Including Commander ;))

We increased priority for this problem and it's likely to be fixed in 4.x
version.

Michael,
I don't agree in all points. You are right that the specific client
software comes with much more features than the development environment
supports - and in my eyes needs to support. But the most often used -
and so required feature - is to lock a file without switching to the
StarTeam client, searching the file there and lock it. Exact this trail
is terrible in StarTeam.
But I had bad experiences with the plugin at all. Our project is really
huge and consists of various sub projects and a lot of external
resources. We organized the starteam different than the sources for
compilation. This is partially due to the old organization comming from
JBuilder and on the other hand we have more than java sources in the
steamteam. Finally we are using the alternate path property intensive
and this is not available in the plugin. So it made it unusable for us.

Maybe someone would want to contribute missing features into StarTeam
plugin? It's available in source code and we'll much appreciate any
contributions.

I was already thinking about, BUT I don't have StarTeam at home and my
company will not spend time to me to coding OS stuff during my work
time. Means, if I could get time from my company, I would not be
permitted to deploy it for free.
