Performance with Hard Disk Encryption

Has anyone had any experience using IDEA with a fully encrypted hard disk and its impact on performance?

Our system administrators are suggesting we do this for security, but I'm slightly concerned that it will absolutely kill IDEA's performance.

It'a actually not as bad as you would think.

We use PointSec. It writes it unencrypted, then encrypts with a low-priority thread. Sometime there is issues with a dual core machine. There is almost always a thread with low-priority availability and IJ is trying to read/write caches and your data. The biggest killer to me is McAfee.

With that said, we have 7200 rpm hard drives dual core machines with 2GB ram.

Hardware encryption would probably be unnoticeable.
