Are these drop in replacements for the December 3.0.1 release?

There is an option to import the configuration from previous versions when
you install.

Are there any caveats I need to be aware of?

Any manually installed plugins will need to be reinstalled.

Do newer version change the underlying configuration files

This are bugfix releases (pre 3.0.x versions) and (in theory :) dont't
break anything.

Or should I only install a new version if I hit a bug that is fixed in a

newer version.

Some eap releases also contain speed improvements. Check the release notes
and decide.


Note that when the new eap for the next version of idea starts, eap releases
will be alpha and anything may happen.

You can unzip the files right into your old installation directory. Settings
and project files remain intact.
I never had any problems with that.

If you're using bin/idea.bat to launch idea, you should save the old batch
file and restore it later.

hm, difficult question ...
I never tried this, but if you do experience problems you can still edit the
config files with a text editor
