IntelliJ IDEA 6.0 is now in active development stage, and the release is
still quite far away.

I believe you answered my next question.

My extended evaluation license for IntelliJ IDEA 5.x is valid until April 15, 2006.

Therefore, my best option is to:

1.) Continue to use my extended evaluation license.

2.) Purchase a personal license a week or two before the 15th.

3.) Upgrade to 6.0 when available.

From your comments, I don't believe that 6.0 would be ready before April 15, 2006, or am I incorrect?

The only reason I ask is; I would just move forward and purchase a personal license for 6.0 if that option was available, instead of purchasing a licnese for 5.0.x first and then upgrading.

That is correct. It's too early to name a specific planned release date for
6.0, but it's definitely later than April 15.
