I honestly never experienced a beta program so robust as this one. I am using palada all the time. Only once or twice it annoyed me. It surprised me a hundred times more. Even if things go wrong you can continue 99 out of 100 times.
Not using IDEA beta can only be a matter of principle not practice. I appreciate that; but then I guess I am a practical programmer. ;)
OK...I'm sold, so should I overwrite my existing 4.0.3 with 4.5 RC VI?...is there any autoupdate feature that it will update automatically for subsequent updates?
Yes, you should delete your old idea 4.0.3 folder (but backup just in case) and replace it with the 4.5 RC. There is no autoupdate feature, but it should notify you when a new release is available.
I would actually say it's not really important to delete your old 4.0.3 folder, just install to a different location, whats more important is that you backup the existing .IntelliJIdea directory that's in your user home area (e.g. Documents and Settings\]]>)... If you leave the original .IntelliJIdea intact and make a copy, 4.5 should migrate your existing 4 settings. When I moved over to 4.5 (and from 3 to 4) I just copied this directory to .IntelliJIdeaOLD just so I could easily switch back if I found problems.

One of the very good things about JI EAPs is that you can have as many builds and versions as you want on one machine with a few caveats: 1. You need to choose to install the configuration and system in the JI directory instead of the recommended user directory. 2. Make sure you are not switching too far back in versions, as project files are not compatible between major versions going backwards, i.e. 4.0 opens 3.0 project files but the converted ones (don't worry, you get a backup :)) cannot be opened in 3.0. I think that officially 4.5 project files should be readable by 4.0.x but I've been working in 4.5 for so long that I just don't know.
That way if there's a 'bad' build (not this late in the release, but months ago there were a few) you simply continue to use the old one which you didn't delete.
