Currently designer doesn't support color tweaking. This feature is planed for Aurora, but we consider changing of colors as a bad UI design. All colors should be configured in LookAndFeel, otherwise you are risky to get inconsistent UI application.

I guess, that "changing color of component" mean coloring configuration, for example. If i try to construct colorpicker placeholder. I put JPanel (Or JLabel) and set Backgound color for it. On click event invoked JColorChooser. I see such "coloring" and in IDEA - Choosing color then you customize syntax highlight.
So, in similar situation setting of colors will better directly, but not from L&F.
