New version updates

Just wondering if I'm doing something silly, but every time I update to a version of WebStorm it installs as a seperate application rather than updating the existing one.  As a result I now have both V4.0 and V4.0.1 side by side.  This might be acceptable for major version updates but for minor ones?

Hi there,

You are doing nothing wrong -- it's just the way how it's done -- every version will offer you to install it into a different folder (that matches version number).

I do not like it either ...  and it does not look like JetBrains is planning to change anything here (you still have to manually delete some leftovers (basically, folder and few small files in it) from previous version installations on Windows platform, unless you uninstall EVERYTHING, including your settings).

It's only really a nuisance due to the need to go around updating the executable path in Executor or any other launcher/script.

Well .. you can do this approch (dunno if it will make life any easier for you, but that's what I'm doing on my Windows PC)

  1. Install PhpStorm/WebStorm into non-default folder (e.g.  "C:\Program Files (x86)\JetBrains\PhpStorm" insetad of default "C:\Program Files (x86)\JetBrains\PhpStorm 4.0.1")
  2. When new version arrives:
    • Use Update feature (this will just upgrade your file in the same folder -- patch will be used)
    • If no patch available (for whatever reason):
      1. Uninstall prevous version
      2. Go to installed app folder (e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\JetBrains\PhpStorm") and delete any leftovers -- folder has to be empty
      3. Install new version into the same folder (e.g. "C:\Program Files (x86)\JetBrains\PhpStorm")
