Combine IDEA and PyCharm

I might not be the only one but it is a major inconvenience to have IDEA and PyCharm as 2 separate IDEs. I have a few projects where we use a soup of languages (python, ruby, erlang). IDAE has a fairly powerful Erlang plugin, but useless when it comes to Python, or Ruby. RubyMine, has Ruby but is useless when it comes to Groovy/Java and Erlang.

Is there any way to install PyCharm as an add on to IDEA? I do not mind paying extra; I am just trying to figure out why the heck do I need 3 different IDEs to work on the same project.

There is such product — and it's called IDEA (surprise). IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate edition (not Community Edition).

Last time I've tried it was supporting all languages that have separate IDEs (Python, Ruby, PHP)via plugins, just like it is described here: http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/features/editions_comparison_matrix.html

So you are saying that if I install python plugin in my Ultimate edition of IDEA it will be equivalent to PyCharm?

I would not say 100% equivalent (IDEA is more advanced product I would say, it is configured a bit differently etc), but required functionality will be there. I have not used Python plugin myself (not familiar with this language at all) – only PHP one, but it worked fine. Install trial version and give it a test drive.

Hi Alex, Python plugin is almost equivalent to PyCharm as it has the same code base. The only difference is release cycles - PyCharm is being released more often.
