Why Can't I Run An ANT Build Whilst Indexing?

I just opened a large project that I hadn't opened for a while in order to run ant dist.
The indexing took ages and I had to wait for it to finish before I could run ANT.
Since ANT runs as an external application, why isn't it available to run during indexing?
