RubyMine seems to store all project and workspace settings is a .idea folder, instead of separate files. This looked a lot saner to me, and I wonder if IDEA could do the same?

Can you elaborate? I already configure idea.{config,plugins,system}.path to point to directories in ${user.home}/.idea so I'd like to know how any forthcoming changes might affect this.
Scott, Future versions of IDEA will replace the .ipr file with a .idea folder inside the project directory. This won't affect your own .idea folder in the user directory.
