Popup (Progress, JavaDoc etc...) Appear Above all Applications

I have a problem with the popups in IDEA 6.0. For example, when the JavaDoc popup is visible and I switch to another running application, the popup remains above the new application. I end up needing to switch back to IDEA and dismiss the popup before I can use another application. This is a bit of a hassle, especially when I attempt to view JavaDoc in my browser.

Anyone else seeing this? I am running Solaris x86 with JDK 1.5.0_08.

Looks like the problem is Solaris specific, can't reproduce on Windows XP.

Does it help if you play with the following property in IDEA_HOME/bin/idea.properties file?

#----

  1. There are two possible values of idea.popup.weight property: "heavy" and "medium".

  2. If you have WM configured as "Focus follows mouse with Auto Raise" then you have to

  3. set this property to "medium". It prevents problems with popup menus on some

  4. configurations.

  5. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

idea.popup.weight=heavy

Nope, unfortunately this didn't help. I did notice though that the progress popup when my project is loading does in fact get covered by another focused application window. I was wrong to list that in the subject. The popups for JavaDoc, Generate etc... will always display in front. Nor do they minimize with IDEA, they remain on screen.

Thanks for the information. Could you please check if this problem is new to IDEA 6.0 or not? Download IDEA 5.1.2 and try to reproduce this issue: http://support.jetbrains.com/kb/entry.jspa?externalID=241&categoryID=5 .

What desktop environment do you use? Are there any settings related to the window focusing? Can you try to play with them?

Yes, new to IDEA 6.0. The popups behave properly in 5.1.2.

I am using Gnome 2.14. Trying the different settings in the 'Window Behavior' preferences offered no improvement.

Thanks, I'll ask IDEA developers to look into this issue.
One more question, do you run IDEA 5.1.2 and 6.0 under the same JDK version?

I have the same problem. Linux, jdk 1.6.0-rc, any WM.

I think the following bug is related but the description should be enhanced to describe the problems with other pop-ups as well:
http://jetbrains.net/jira/browse/IDEA-9579

Indeed, this is identified Sun's issue: JPopup appears on all desktops running
under Solaris and some Linuses.
