IDEA 5.0
So I just got the email saying every license I buy for 4.5 between now and
the general release of 5.0 gets a free upgrade to 5.0. Does that mean the
4.5 license I bought in January doesn't include the 5.0 update? I thought
it included a year of updates but maybe those were just minor updates that
were included. Can anyone clarify that for me? Thanks.

I'm unsure where 'a year of updates' comes from but this is what's on jebrains.com
site about:
The IntelliJ IDEA 4.5 license price includes
Unlimited e-mail access to technical support
Bug-fix updates and minor releases at no additional cost
40% off the full license price when you upgrade to future major releases.

Ah there it is. I couldn't quite remember the actual text. And it is
indeed minor updates anyway. Thanks for clarifying that for me. So what
are my options for 5.0? Is my best option just to license 5.0 using the
upgrade pricing then?

Exactly. Since you've already got a 4.5 license there's no need to hurry
up with this "buy 4.5 now get 5.0 for free" offer. AFAIK this offer makes
sense for new customers mostly.

The year of free updates was only at the beginning (3 years ago?). Later
they changed it.
