How do I get the modal git commit dialog back?
Answered
Making this a tab on the left side was a bad choice. The nature of a commit means that I often want to see a list of files, which means I need to expand that tab to the right to see the full file path:

See, at the arrow? Half my file path is not visible. So I need to expand that to the right to see the full path. But wait! When I go to the file browser view (CMD+1) now the file browser is taking up way too much horizontal real estate.
This was a bad change. How do I reverse it?

The modal commit interface was moved to a dedicated plugin in the latest 2025.1 release: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IJPL-177161. The plugin should be installed and enabled by default: please check in Settings (
⌘ + ,orCtrl + Alt + S) > Plugins > Modal Commit Interface. Then enable the following option: Settings (⌘ + ,orCtrl + Alt + S) > Advanced Settings > Use modal commit interface for Git and Mercurial. Also, make sure that the Enable staging area option is disabled in Settings (
⌘ + ,orCtrl + Alt + S) > Version Control > Git.thanks
Ive done this an it doesnt work. I know your super intent on gasslighting us users who apreciate useful interfaces but for the love of gawd please top making this so hard.
Ideally it should be directly accessasbel here:
Yohave already back tracked and made the plugin incldued by default how about you make it easy to enable and make it work. I HATE this new commit interface and now I have no opeiont but to use another program to see a git diff!
Bradley Hayes Thank you for the information.
Please disable the option – Settings (
⌘ + ,orCtrl + Alt + S) > Version Control > Git > Enable staging area.Modal commit interface is not supported for the staging area.
