IDEA 2018.1 losing keystrokes

I'm having problems with IDEA 2018.1 losing keystrokes.  It has been doing this pretty consistently ever since I started using EAP about a week or so ago.  It seems to be mostly a problem when the code completion pops up.  It seems like the keystrokes go to the code completion window but then are not reflected in the 'main' window if the code completion window disappears (eg because it has no matching suggestions).
