Project Window configuration not picked up with IDEA 2018.1

Answered

Hello:

With IDEA  2017 I had the project window configured so that it resembled Windows File Explorer.  See here:

Today, after I installed IDEA 2018.1 Build #IU-181.4203.550, built on March 26,2018, I lost the project window configuration.  See here:

Is there any way I can get my preferred Project window configuration or is that not available anymore?

Thank you

Gary

Hi, have you imported the settings during install?

Hello"

I am pretty sure I told IDEA 2018 to use the previous settings when it prompted me during the install.  I usually do this upon any of these IDEA installations.

But, in case I missed this, or IDEA missed this, is there a way that I can now import the previous version's settings or do I have to delete the 2018 install and install it again?

Thank you

Gary

Import dialog is displayed only when there is no existing directory for IDE configuration of this version.

In your case there is probably %MY_HOME_DIR%/.IntelliJIdea2018.1 directory already created if you were using EAP or RC builds before.

Removing IDE configuration directory will display this dialog again on the next start.

I did as you have instructed.

  • I closed IDEA 2018.1
  • I deleted the config folder in C:\Users\XXXX\.IntelliJIdea2018.1
  • I reopened IDEA 2081.1.  When prompted I selected the config folder found in C:\Users\XXXXXX\.IntelliJIdea2017.3\
  • When IDEA was finished loading I see the Project Window is still the same.  The configuration from IDEA 2017 is not shown
  • I created a settings.jar file from another machine that has IDEA 2017.3 installed on it and put that settings file on this machine
  • In IDEA 2018 I selected to import settings from the settings.jar file created from IDEA 2017.3.  When IDEA 2018 restarted the project window did not have the configuration that I have in IDEA 2017.3.

Can you please tell me where in the Settings should I go to change the configuration of the project window so that the display resembles Windows File Explorer?

Thanks again for your time.

I have checked, looks that default themes are not supporting this feature yes: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-165101, were you using a custom theme (Settings | Appearance and behaviour| Appearance)?

"Dotted directory tree".  I guess that is what the configuration is called.

Well it has been some time since I configured the Project window in my IDEA, and so I am sorry to say I don't remember how I configured it that way.  I don't remember using any kind of custom theme but, as I said, it has been awhile.

If I did use a custom theme, can you please tell me where in the IDEA 2017.3 directory I would find a configuration file for it?

Thank you

Gary

Hi. If you still have 2017.3 installed, you could start it and check theme name  in Settings | Appearance and Behaviour | Appearance

Hello.  Yes, in another machine where I have IDEA 2017.3 installed, when I go to Settings | Appearance & Behavior > Appearance I see a "Windows" theme selected in the "Theme" dropdown.

So, I did the same thing I did the other day:

  •  In the IDEA  2017.3 I exported settings.  I took the settings jar file and put in on my machine that has IDEA 2018.1.
  • I closed IDEA  2018 and removed the config folder from the .IntelliJIdea2018.1  folder
  • I restarted IDEA 2018 and this time when prompted I selected to not import any settings.  Intellij opened with the Darcula scheme.
  • I then imported the settings jar.  Idea 2018.1 closed and restarted.
  • In Settings | Appearance & Behavior > Appearance there is no "Windows" theme available for selection in the "Theme" dropdown.
  • I noticed there are a couple other settings from the IDEA 2017.3 that were not picked up like the layout ("Window | Store current layout as default")  and  font types and sizes I had set for the editor window.

Would that "Windows" theme be stored in the config folder somewhere or would it be stored in some other folder in the .IntellijIdea2.17.3 directory?

It is looking like IDEA 2018.1 is ignoring certain settings that were made in the previous IDEA version.

Thank you

Unfortunately "Windows" theme was deprecated in 2018.1, please check this comment: https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-185538#comment=27-2752281
