double modal dialog madness - android studio component installer in IntelliJ
Answered
I wanted to write a quick test but I was 'missing system image'. I clicked on it and whoa, I am in the middle of a long download with no 'Background' button only "Cancel". IntelliJ is unusable and I must wait. I'm at home where the internet connection is slow.
Any download windows should have a "Background" button and definitely should not lock up the IDE. I guess I'll go get some snacks and take a nap.

Also, even though the SDK Quickfix Installation window is movable, it cannot be minimized. The windows below, Select Deployment Target and the main window are not even movable or minimizeable.

Lol, after that wait, it turns out to run the Accelerated Nougat, I need Android SDK Platform 25 (after i have already downloaded 27 and 26). And the IDE is locked up again...
Please report Android subsystem issues per https://developer.android.com/studio/report-bugs.html.
Android Studio has the background button! But IntelliJ does not.
It may appear later when AS 3.1 is merged. Right now IntelliJ IDEA 2018.1 is based on AS 3.0.
