intellij idea update policy and bug fixes

Answered

Hi,

I bought intelliJ IDEA already for the second time.
Last time 12.2017 the 2017 version.
And I had as well PHPStorm in the past.

It bothered me in the past and it bothers me now again even more that I do not get any bug fixes for my perpetual version any more just after few months.
Each notification that my IDE is "ready to update" presents me an update to the 2018 branch, but I explicitely DO NOT WANT to switch to 2018 branch.
I would like to use my 2017 version and just expect to get every bug fix for that version just because I paid for this 2017 version and you should feel responsible for the bugs, that are there at least as long my subscription is valid which is until 12.2018.

If you fix a bug for the new version only knowing that the same bug exists in the previous version, this is plain highly unfair. Even more if the previous version is just few month old.

To be clear I do not need new features - I expect the bugs discovered and fixed for the 2018 version to be fixed as well for the 2017 version.

This is how fallback license works, you get the perpetual version available at the moment when you purchase 12+ months subscription.

Critical issues get fixed and backported into the previous versions. Non-critical issues and features are not backported.

If you feel that some critical issue was not backported, you can request it at https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issues/IDEA  by commenting the corresponding ticket.

You can also request a refund if you are not satisfied with the quality of the product, please contact the sales team: https://www.jetbrains.com/support/sales/.

Hi, thank you for thy quick reply.

What is the definition of a critical issue for an IDE?
E.g. I buy a software with specifc features and capabilities at a point in time X. If some of this features have a bug and they do not work as intended or do not work at all - is this a critical bug?
I do not monitor all the bug reports etc. It is not my responsibility. I just do not see any updates coming for my version although I have a running subscription. Does this mean there are no bugs so far? I doubt so. I have never experienced a software with no bugs.

Critical is a bug marked as such in YouTrack. If a feature doesn't work and you don't plan updating to the current version that has a fix, we can only suggest to get a refund. Sorry.
