PHPStorm 18.1 crashes on Ubuntu 16.04

I am trying to run PHPStorm 18.1 on my Ubuntu 16.04 system.  I'm accessing the Ubuntu
system using TightVNC.

PHPStorm crashes all by itself within 5 minutes, even if I don't do anything.  If I look at some
of the dropdown menus like File->Settings it crashes more quickly.
