Which new 2018 Mac Mini for primarily IDE use - faster processor or more cores?
I am considering buying a new Mac Mini (https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/mac-mini) for software development to replace old MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7) and am looking for advice.
Apple has a few options for the processor...
- 3.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i3 processor has 6MB of shared L3 cache
- 3.0GHz 6-core Intel Core i5 processor has 9MB of shared L3 cache and features Turbo Boost speeds of up to 4.1GHz
- 3.2GHz 6-core Intel Core i7 processor has 12MB of shared L3 cache, Turbo Boost speeds of up to 4.6GHz, and Hyper-Threading technology
They have a link for processor configuration which states... "Selecting a processor for your needs largely depends on the software you intend to run. Single-thread applications operate more efficiently with higher clock speeds, while software that uses multithreading will run best on a processor with more cores."
Not knowing the IntelliJ software architecture... my question is which processor would be most suitable for IntelliJ (both editing and building) without spending $$$ on unnecessary processor?

I would definitely go for an i7 if only to give the Mac the longest life expectancy. I have a 2017 model with i7 and SSD - just flies along.
