Excessive system memory use

I've been seeing Intellij use masssive amounts of memory, like right now my current instance is showing 15GB ram used. I have the jvm set to 6GB through jvm properties, and the IDE itself is showing 972MB of 5456MB used.

I should say, I'm using 2018.2.5
Please check if the problem reproduces at 2018.3
Still happens. Also with 2018.2.6.
I just now had to wait a couple minutes for intellij to respond, and noticed my system memory use was up to over 23GB total, and after intellij came back I exited and system memory use is now back down to 4.5GB. I think that's a bit excessive for a relatively small project.
It also likes to peg my cpu for many seconds at a time after some changes. My best guess is something weird is happening in the intellisense lookup but thats just a guess.
