Settings, plugins, etc. lost after upgrade from 2018.2 to 2018.3 on macOS

Answered

I just upgraded my IntellIJ CE installation from 2018.2 to 2018.3.1 and - unlike previous upgrades that I've done - none of my settings, plugins, recent projects, etc. were preserved.

I do not have a settings.zip file from before the upgrade. Is there a process documented where I can create a settings.zip file from the old settings that I think are still there under ~/Library/Preferences/IdeaIC2018.2 and then import those into the current version? Or is there a better way, given that I do not have a settings.zip file from 2018.2?

I was able to do the following steps to get my settings back.

  1. Download the macOS .dmg file for 2018.2.7 (link available on this page: https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download/previous.html)
  2. Open it. Drag the IntellIJ icon to a temporary folder, not the Applications folder.
  3. Run IntellIJ 2018.2.7 from the temporary folder. Export settings. Note the location of where the JAR file is stored. Exit IntellIJ.
  4. Run IntellIJ 2018.3 from the Applications folder. Import settings from the JAR created in the previous step.

Hi.

If you for some reason have missed a step to export settings to a new version from an old one - you should remove the settings folder from a new version, you will be prompted with export settings dialog on restart.
