After upgrading to 2019.1, lost last open projects

Answered

Really bad. Lost all the settings while upgrading. Restored settings from earlier backup, but lost all last open projects.

Recently opened projects are stored in IDE config/⁨options⁩/recentProjects.xml file. On 1st launch of a new major version, IDE asks to import settings from previous version when these settings should be imported. Were you prompted with the dialog?

To run the import again you can by starting IDE with default settings (rename/remove settings folders).

The same thing happened to me.  The 1st launch after the upgrade never asked to import settings.  Deleting the IntelliJIdea2019.1 preferences folder and restarting did work (i.e. it prompted with the dialog).  Although, after the dialog, it just sat there and didn't load anything.  After quitting and starting it up again, it looks like everything is fine.

IDE will not ask to import settings if the settings directory for this version already exists. It can happen if you've used EAP version before.
