Charset or Language Change On Update

Answered

This is the bug after an update was accepted to  version 2019.1.4 just now.

I thought that IntelliJ was only in English. The 'language' shown is not known. I doubt if it's a real language - more likely to be a rendering of a Cyrillic alphabet in Roman characters.

I think that it's true to say that this bug is a "showstopper".

Anyone got a solution ?

Thanks, Serge.

All seems to be working properly now.

Problem back again.

In fact no matter how many times I change the custom font, it always lapses back to Pqfo Tbot after reopening the IDE . . .

This looks like a settings bug.

But on Admin account (I do all work on ordinary user account) I can open the new version 2 IntelliJ CE with no problems. Maybe there are old settings in the IntelliJ workspace ?

Wait . . . If I uncheck    Use Custom Font all is well again.

This thing is a bug. It should store the user's selected custom font and reapply it every time IntelliJ opens. More work to do, boys.

https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-219147 may be related. Thugh, it's not easily reproducible. Doesn't happen for me.

Hmmm. A Heisenbug discovered in IntelliJ, perhaps !

Linked issue looks like similar effects as my issue - no persistence of custom settings.

You work long hours, Sergei.

Now I notice something else.

Maybe you can reproduce this.

Go to Settings > Appearance & Behaviours > Appearance.

If Use Custom Font is unchecked (in which case Segoe UI is the default font) then check it.

Now on the font drop-down list select Open Sans. If you don't have this font, please install it for the duration of the test.

Click Apply and Okay.

Close IntelliJ and reopen it. Go to Settings > Appearance & Behaviours > Appearance.

You should get something like this -

Looking at the new encoding of Open Sans in the font drop-down menu, it's clear that each character in the font title is advanced to the next character alphabetically above it.

                              Open Sans   =====>   Pqfo Tbot

A similar mis-mapping occurs with character is the IntelliJ menus - except for the underlined lead character.

To restore IntelliJ to its normal state just

Go to Settings > Appearance & Behaviours > Appearance

Uncheck Use Custom Font , click Apply and Okay.

This mis-mapping of characters only seems to occur when the custom font selected is Open Sans.

Why Open Sans is the only font giving rise to this, I have no idea.

Many people, e.g. those not involved in web development where this font is in

vogue, may not have Open Sans in their PC. Maybe this explains why the bug is

not easily reproduced.
