Writing classes very slow in 2020.3.2 compared to 2020.3.1

Answered

I am on Mac OS Catalina (10.15.7 (19H114)).

I notice mostly when running tests, IDE tries to compile, write classes, etc. It seems to 'hang' on the "writing classes" part. Most of the time (90% >) the IDE responds fine (so no UI is blocking?). Sometimes it does block UI (I get the OS spinning wheel).

There is no feedback on to why/where it hangs.

Rolling back to 2020.3.1 seems to have resolved it (for now).

Hi Stefan,

Does it help if you temporarily disable all downloaded plugins under Preferences | Plugins > Installed and restart the IDE?

Please also provide the log folder (Help | Collect Logs and Diagnostic Data) and a CPU snapshot of a bit of working with freezes after restarting. You can upload the data privately to https://uploads.jetbrains.com/

I'm upgraded to IntelliJ IDEA 2020.3.3 Ultimate, I found the same problem.

My laptop is a MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2019 Intel Corei9 2.3GHz RAM 32GB, macOS Big Sur 11.2.3

After I upgrade It runs very very slowly.

I cannot be coding, I have rolled back to version 2020.3.1

Rookie Dev Please try beta version of IntelliJ IDEA. There are several related fixes inside.

I also noticed that the lag before updating code validation became significanlty longer in 2020.3.3 in comparison to 2020.3.2. I have to make ~3-second pause in typing to see the results of code validation (colorising, inspections, etc). The system specification is Intel Core i7-1165G7 @2.8GHz, 16 MB of memory, SSD, Windows 10 Home.

That seems as not a purely performance issue. The system does not re-index until I have stopped typing. The indexation blocks the UI for a while so even the text cursor stops blinking.

This is absolutely not comfortable.

Switching to EPA did not fully solve the issue, however it seem more responsive.

Zherebjatjew please share logs folder and CPU snapshot of the beta version at https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/newIssue?project=IDEA

Steps to reproduce would also be appreciated.

Until today I have this problem with the 'writing classes' that has made my work very difficult and makes me worried about my deadlines! I signed up for ULTIMATE because so far they say it's the best IDE on shit, it really is, but this slowness issue with the 'writing class' is too worrying for my work team and particularly too disappointing.
I was using version 2021.3.3 and now I have to test on previous versions to see which one is more stable in this regard.

Gabriel You can also check with the beta available at https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/nextversion/. It should be released by the end of this month.
