AI Chat Assistant Credits Finished Too Quickly

I have been using the AI Chat Assistant for the last couple of months, and my monthly credits have always been sufficient. I normally use the assistant throughout the month without any issues.

However, this month, after the recent update, my credit limit increased from 20 to 26 credits. Despite that, all of my credits were used up within just two or three days.

I know exactly how much I have used the AI over the last few days, and there is no way my usage should have consumed all of my credits. I am 100% certain of that. This appears to be a bug in the credit tracking system.

What should I do with this issue?

Hi,

Thanks for posting. Since the August 2025 update, AI credits reflect the actual per-token cost of each request, not the number of prompts. Usage depends mostly on the model you pick and how much context is sent. Premium models (Claude, GPT) cost much more per request, and large context (open files, project context, long chat history) adds up fast even with short prompts. That is why credits can run out quicker than before.

A few things that help:
- Use a lighter model (for example Gemini Flash) for routine tasks.
- Keep context small, and start a new chat to drop long history.
- Local Full Line completion runs on-device and uses no cloud credits.

If you still think the usage does not add up, please open a private request here and mention this post: https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Thank you very much for the update.

It looks like this issue was also related to the Business account seat allocation. It seems that everything is pretty much sorted now.
