Insert after carpet - Only in Jupiter Notebook

Suddenly when trying to type something into a jupyter notebook the new character gets inserted after the caret and the caret stays where it is. E.g. when just typing "hello world" without pressing anything else this results in "dlrow olleh". Restarting everything did not fix this issue.
