Please check the archetype version suggested by IDEA. For me, it is 1.0.2 - and for thsi version teh problem occurs even if project is created without IDEA using, just from command line.

Hi Melody,have you tried to enable the command-line acceleration (so that the native svn client is used to improve the performance)? This option needs the svn1.7 native client to be installed.
