I uninstalled/reinstalled WebStorm and it seems to be working for now. This can be closed.

For anyone else who stumbles into this. It's not possible to remove the Markdown plugin as it's bundled. I had to disable the plugin. This caused the application to freeze, and I had to Force Quit ...
