I don't know if this counts as a 'best' practice or not, but I would seperate the server from the client .The source roots could be seperate, named for each module, or a modified 'maven' style Doe...

I would think to do what you want, you are better off using native Maven functionality and creating a new customized archetype.See http://maven.apache.org/guides/mini/guide-creating-archetypes.html...
