Is the problem that it is missing a hibernate facet or maybe the datasource is missing.

I feel your pain. I love everything about my mac except the lack of a JDK (crappy java support) and the changed IntelliJ shortcuts.

The Mac doesn't even have the notion of a JDK. It is part of the OS. That is why you cannot install an earlier version of java than what your machine already has. The only option is to reinstall...

IntelliJ produces the equivalent war as Maven. Maven adds a META-INF directory with a bunch of junk, but that has nothing to do with the web application itself.

I had the same problem. I started the server, went into the server admin, undeployed the webapp, closed the server, then started it via IntelliJ.

You may need to specify the scope that they are in. They may be request attributes (requestScope).
