Not sure how much of this might relate to IDEA-159045 which has been irritating me for most of the morning but as the JVM didn't crash during the merge I suspect not.

Oops yes you're right must have been some other controller methods I as looking at and they were forwarding request and response to private methods. Failed to notice this handleRequestInternal code...
