Pycharm Syntax Highlighting not working

Hello,
I'm working in Pycharm 2017.1.2 and Syntax Highlighting in some of my projects is very inconsistent, especially for function/method/class definitions which often appear with no highlighting at all.
How should I troubleshoot this?

I am also seeing a repeated error on launch with a message that only says "null" but the "Report to JetBrains" button is greyed out.
Hi Neal! Please try the latest stable build (2017.1.3). If it does not help - please send the idea.log file from Help | Show Log in ..., and the problematic code sample (if possible) to our support: pycharm-support@jetbrains.com
Thanks will test 2017.1.3 and follow up as you suggested.
Unfortunately the latest build has not corrected this issue. I will email the log to support and reference this thread.
Turns out just recreating preferences and cache files did the trick (the basic troubleshooting that I neglected to do). Problem solved.
