perforce - Error: p4 where wrong result

I am trying to get perforce working with pycharm and when I click "Test Connection" it returns successfully.  Also on Version Control on the Repository tab I am able to download a list of change lists and they look correct, but when I attempt to do something like click on a file and "Compare with Latest Repository Version" I get "Error: p4 where wrong result " followed by a lot of p4 client and file info.  Anyone have any insight into what the problem is?
