IDEA 8 on Mac OS X - Is there a way to turn off font smoothing / antialiasing? After trying many fonts that seems to be the only solution.

That seems to be the only solution for what?
You could disable Quartz rendering by setting the property "Root > Java > Properties > apple.awt.graphics.UseQuartz" to false. It will look very ugly (in my opinion).
