maven : multimodule pom validation incorrect

I have a multimodule maven pom, whose modules are deployed in a flat structure.

The modules section of the pom is as follows

..\module1 ..\module2 ]]>

each submodules are marked as errors by IDEA saying "Cannot resolve symbol ..\module1".
