Intellij 8.1.3 is not refreshing the screen

I was using Intellij 8.1.3 for quite sometime on Windows XP computer, JDK 1.5.

I upgraded to IDEA 9 (MAIA 10875). But due to an issue with refreshing as I have in the following link:

I switch back to 8.1.3. But now my 8.1.3 is broken. The IDEA comes up fine, but the window does not repaint or refresh. It appears as if it is hanging.

Any idea?
