"could not save application settings: null" when I install inspectiongadgets plugin

I'm running IDEA 8.1.3 on OSX 10.5. When I install the InspectionGadgets plugin, I get the "could not save application settings: null" or "could not save project: null" whenever IDEA loses foreground focus. Has anyone else seen this or have a suggestion for how to resolve?

InspectionGadgets comes bundled with IDEA itself.

There's no need to install it explicitly.
