Sorry to deprecate my title as Jetbrains/CLion fanboi

My ardor for all things Jetbrains, like my yearly expense of the ALL PRODUCTS License has cooled noticeably.

The bait and switch approach to the licensing of AI has taken all the fun out of my CLIon life.

My concern is threefold. First the quality of the  AI integration in CLion leaves everything to be desired. There are real problems with the ways generated snippets of code get named and included into your source code. On many occasions the apply feature has corrupted my code causing real pain. Secondly the quality of line completion and generated code varies with the phase of the moon. Sometime it is miraculous and takes my breath away, but more often it introduces rabbit holes  that threaten to suck up unscheduled development time. For instance it is common for generated code to depend on libraries that are difficult to integrate or unavailable.  Thirdly, when the AI starts hallucinating, things get wild. I prompted the AI Assistant to document my project and after thinking about it a while, it produced an astounding document file full of nice graphics and navigation features, very professional. But it also claimed unsubstantiated things about the features and benefits of my code. It claimed compatibilities, security protocols, and documented features such as an API the doesn't even exist in my application.

I invested quite a bit of my time exploring the AI Assistant which was promoted in glowing terms by Jetbrains, thinking if I didn't I would lose relevance and my ability to remain competitive. After quite a bit of struggle and an impressive failure rate in terms of AI usage to advance my software, i look up and find that the cost of the AI Assistant exceeds that of the ALL PRODUCTS License.  Jetbrains claims they are providing more value than we are paying for, but by what metric.

It has been a struggle to pay the fees for the ALL PRODUCTS License even though I believed it was worth it. It looks to me however like instead of relying on the engineering value of their software, they are becoming middlemen reselling AI as the largest portion of their income. Given the scarcity of work I have seen lately, I can't afford to stay in this game.

Hello Ichibrosan,

Thank you for sharing your opinion! We are sorry you feel this way.

the cost of the AI Assistant exceeds that of the ALL PRODUCTS License

Could you please elaborate on that? The All Products Pack license already includes the AI Pro plan (https://www.jetbrains.com/help/ai/ai-service-license.html#subscription-plans). So, you can use the JetBrains AI service with your All Products Pack license.

Do you mean that the quota of the AI Pro plan is smaller than you need?

I checked out the AI pricing and have tried communicating with it to try to help me understand C Lion, after installing C Lion for the first time yesterday. You're absolutely right and the same can be said for the competition, which is probably all they're measuring themselves against, as opposed to considering what the customer wants. The pricing description takes me back to 2002, when you constantly had to screen your mobile calls and use a landline whenever possible because you were worried about wasting/going over your “minutes”. Do ISPs even limit your data anymore? I switched to unlimited data over a decade ago because I wasn't content having to decide whether or not a download/upload was worth using up my data limitations. While I understand that they have to host servers that provide the processing power for everyone using their product and that limiting usage means less costly hardware and energy bills on their part, but this is 2025. We've been through the days of usage limits and nobody likes it.
When I pay for something, I want to use it freely and most people feel the same. If these AI developers are going to unleash this emotionless god and cause our extinction, the least they can do is let us use it as we please in the little time we have left; especially for what you're paying.
As for the AI, its extremely slow to respond, compared to other AI, like Gemini in "Thinking" mode. While testing it out, I was asking it a question, asking Gemini the same question, and then comparing their answers. Gemini, responded MUCH quicker and more accurately, despite Junie having the advantage of actually being inside the software itself that I'm asking questions about.
I can't get through a simple debug of my software that has already been debugged in VS and works fine because I always end up stuck on this damned “nop” line. I asked Junie to help me solve the issue and she kept referring to some test project that must have come with C Lion, like she had no idea what software was actually open in C Lion. I thought the whole point of paying more than the cost of a premium plan with one of the top 5 AI for a less capable AI was the benefit of having it fully aware of what's going on in the software you're using, but I guess I was wrong.
