Clion is becomming unusable

I am using the latest drop Clion 2018.1.2 (cl-181.4668.70) with fresh installs and cache wipes on both Ubuntu 14.04 VM and 16.04 host.  I am experiencing near constant random freezes, mostly context indexing but sometimes with no visual indication of what is happening.  Freezes last anywhere from 15-45 seconds and sometimes longer.  I have ample ram and my OS is not swapping nor is it heavily loaded.  I have no hardware problems and I am running on a fast NVMe SSD This has been getting progressively worse with each new version since fall of 2017.  In the past I routinely worked with several open projects, now I am barely productive working in a single small project.
