Code input window

I have just started using PyCharm as the text Editor to input Python Code. (3.7) When I am starting to create a project, I don't seem to have a window into which I can input code. Instead I have a window that shows the following:
Search Everywhere
Go to File
Recent Files
Navigation Bar
Drop files here to open
I find I can edit in a "scratch window", but that is not how it was done on video from Giraffe Academy.
Can you help?
