File watcher changes not noticed for very long time after black formatting on save

I've followed the instructions use the black python formatter with pycharm (https://black.readthedocs.io/en/stable/editor_integration.html#pycharm-intellij-idea).  After saving a file, it takes at least a minute for pycharm to notice the changes and prompt me to either load the file from disk or keep whats cached in memory.  pycharm is effectively useless for a minute or two while this happens.  How can I get pycharm to load the reformatted file immediately? This is with community 2019.2 on linux.
