Cannot update from 2016.3.5 to 2017.1

Answered

Installed version is 2016.3.5 (Build #IC-163.13906.18). Platform is Linux, is IDEA installed in a directory in "/opt/" having the same user/group permissions as the current running user.

Go to "Help"->"Check for updates..." : "2017.1 is available".

But no update button is available - only "Download".

I just downloaded 2016.3.5 two weeks ago and don't want to download another 500MB. This is really annoying. And there is not even a reason given why the update is not possible.

Patch updates are not available between the major releases, vote for https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/IDEA-108061.

Can the patch documentation be updated to explicitly say that patches are not available between major releases? I think it is implied in the last sentence of the first paragraph but it is a vital detail that can easily go unnoticed.

It says that:

Please note the following:

  • IntelliJ IDEA can be updated only to a minor EAP version, but not to the major one. For example, you can update IntelliJ IDEA 2017.2.3 to 2017.2.4 EAP, but not to 2017.3 EAP. The 2017.3 EAP version in this case will be installed in parallel with the existing stable installation.
