Idea not opening project folder after loading project

Hello,
I have intellij idea ultimate 2017.3.2 RC.
Every time I open a project IntelliJ idea loads the .iml file and nothing else.
I tried downgrading to 2017.3.1 and I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but the problem is still there.

Your project is either broken or is configured incorrectly. Make sure it has the content roots with source roots defined: https://www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/configuring-content-roots.html.
The problem is with every project I have, with both the old ones and the one I create at the moment.
If I create a project, save it and close it when I open the project again It's empty.
This happens also with the projects that were working earlier
I tried following the guide you posted and it works until I close the ide.
Move the projects outside of OneDrive managed directory. It seems to not save your files correctly or reverts them.
I"m having this same problem, and I am using OneDrive as well.
Here's the real confusion. The one computer, this works fine on. It'll open and load everything as is ok. Same version of IntelliJ on both systems (2018.2). BUT on my home system, I get the same result Alessandro. Folders don't load. Confused.
I even resorted to completely uninstalling and removing every trace of IntelliJ from my system, and then reinstalling. Does the same thing.
Wondering if anyone else had this issue and if they fixed it?? I really prefer to save my project in a shared folder so it's easy to work on them regardless of what system I'm using.

This is not really a solution, because I do want OneDrive to save space and bandwidth and not download my gigabytes of photos locally just for Intellij IDEA to try and scan them...
