Missing window splitters?

I remember that you used to be able to split a editor pane by dragging an arrow from just below the top of the window. I've just tried to do it now, and I noticed that the drag arrows are no longer there.

Is this something that has been removed from IDEA?

I ask because there is a lot of stuff that just doesn't seem to work on my machine, but seems to work on everyone else's.

In some ancient Idea build there were such splitters.
With recent Idea version you have to right-click on the editor tab and select "Split Vertically/Horizontally" (or use the same options in the window menu).

Thanks.

I just couldn't remember when they'd vanished ...

Am I the only one that thinks the "old" way was much better?

Nope, I preferred the old way as well.

I second that, I thought the old way was closer to emacs. I miss it.

Here's a thought - why can't there be a hot key for hidding all tabs?

The old way was definitely better!

Why did they change it?

Hello Joe,

It sure can. Settings | Keymap, assign a key to "Close All Editors" action.

I have no idea. I wonder if they can change it back or at least put the drag handles back.

Yes, but close all editors does just that. I want to be able to hide all tabs, and then restore all tabs with another key press.

Note that "in the old way" it was not possible at all to view two different files at the same time. The split bar was only ever applied to a single editor file.

So what I really would like to have is the UltraEdit behavior:
- a split bar for a single editor window
- plus each editor being a single MDI window (with full screen being the default)
- plus an additional, optional tab bar

I like what they currently have. I would just like the addition of a vertical splitter bar.

Yes, the split bar was only applied to a single window, but you could still split the pane horizontally/vertically to look at other files. It was the best of both worlds.

Frankly I'm amazed that it went, but the file commander thingy stayed!

I'm going to submit a request to have it restored.

Now I think about it, I wonder if it was removed ,to allow for the space they would need for that breadcrumb bar that runs along the top.

Perhaps it could be another option on the 'editor' preference ...

Doesn't "Split Vertically" action work for you?
