Please fix this usability bug - creating class with package
See screenshot - it appears to me that creating a class in a specified package isn't such an strange idea. (I am pretty sure that there is a Jira issue somewhere.)
In general I think you should test Idea's usability on a new user.
We old-timers have more or less getting used to some quirks that are not so obvious to Idea newbies.

I am used to creating the package separate from the class. This should really be added. If at all possible, allow auto-complete for the package names (or allow selection from within the same dialog).
In general I think you should test Idea's usability on a new user.
Very true, although I will note that this one actually catches me at least once a month. Something in my brain just assumes it will work, in spite of having been caught by it literally dozens of times. Another small "why does this take two steps?" issue is having to do Ctrl-N followed by Ctrl-G. I always think Ctrl-N :]]> should work, but it never does.

+10 for the suggestion for the usability on a new user and the feature request.
+1 too :)
That is a very old, but very nice request. Votes may go here:

Thanks, Bas. I knew these both were somewhere in deep backlog, but didn't have the heart to look.

There is DeclarationTools plugin which includes very similar
functionality :)

Yes, please don't forget these small but important features when working on
the big new features. It still amazes me that I can't create a new class in
a package from anywhere isn't possible out of the box with IDEA.

+10 It's the same story with each new version!
In keeping with IDEA's "Develop with Pleasure" roots, I hope that the JetBrains folks can set aside a small fraction of their development time to address these issues.
Maybe we could help them to find those small issues which would make our
live easier with IDEA?
Agreed. I say please stop adding new features but fix the existing ones. JDeveloper and Intellij are my favorite IDEs of all time. I love JDeveloper for its massive featureset but I love Intellij for its java coding and refactoring brilliance. I understand intellij trying to add lot more features in, but lets not forget about ease of use and turn it into JDeveloper which has a steep learning curve as it is very very powerful.
