Is it possible to upgrade from community to ultimate edition without fresh install
Answered
Hi all,
I have a license key for Intellij
I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade from my existing Intellij Community Edition to the new version without the need to install a new copy of it in my machine.
Thanks
Gaurav

I doubt the installer will give you a choice.

It is deliberate waste in the service of mindless profit.
Hello Gaurav,
It's not possible. You can uninstall IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition either
before or after you install IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate.

:( DAMMIT :( ~ awesome IDE though :/
:( Dammit +1 ^^ yes, it's awesome IDE!
Is this still not possible? :/
Yes, it's still the same, there is no upgrade path from the Community to Ultimate, a separate install of IntelliJ IDEA is needed, though you can migrate the settings using File | Export Settings and File | Import Settings.
UP UP UP. You need this possibillity for upgrade cause i used community version and I want to upgrade for ultimate with saving settings, withot new installation.
Also you need the ability to revert to community version from ultimate with saving all settings when the lisence finished.
My new employer bought an Ultimate license for me. I had been using Community edition before this new job.
Now I don't have a push-button migration? I have so many settings and plugins that took me months to get just right... and now I'm supposed to work with a fresh install and jump through some hoops to migrate settings? What about plugins? I guess I'll look at my list of plugins and install in Ultimate? And the settings for the plugins? I don't even want to have to think about this stuff. I probably won't use the Ultimate license and I'm going to tell them not to renew it next year.
Ture Hoefner You can just copy the config directory (which contains the plugins already) from the Community to Ultimate: Configuration directory: https://www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/tuning-the-ide.html#config-directory.

Thanks a lot!
That worked.
It would still be nice to have a 'push-button' upgrade/migration.
