Cannot select pom.xml when trying to add a maven project

Hi there, I am trying to open a maven project using IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate 2018.1 on Lniux (Build IU-181.4203.550).
I can see and select the pom.xml in the Selct Path dialog but the OK button is grayed out.
The list of maven projects is empty and I am trying to add a maven project.
I also get a message when starting IntelliJ: "Unable to open maven project: see logs for details", but it does not tell me which logs.

ok now I deleted almost all old projects in this area. Now when I try to add the maven project, the ok button is not grayed out, but when I select the pom.xml and click ok I once again get the "Unable to open maven project message"
ok I moved $HOME/.IntelliJIdea2018.1 and tried to create a whole new configuration, so far it looks promising
