Latest IntelliJ update appears to be badly broken
Answered
Just update to latest IntelliJ release on Mac. It lost my existing projects and then I couldn't even recreate them. Something is badly broken. Fortunately I was able to reinstall from ideaIU-2019.1.3.dmg and it seems to have recovered, existing project opened by default.

Well that's nice but doesn't explain why I couldn't reopen exiting projects with project files in place or even recreate them from the maven poms. I've been an IDEA user for almost 20 years, never encountered this level of BS.
See if reinstalling from http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/download/index.html helps. There is probably some exception in the logs (https://intellij-support.jetbrains.com/hc/articles/207241085). Please submit a bug at https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/issues/IDEA if the issue persists and attach the logs.
I am on board with jconti13. I've been a paying user for many years now and the recent updates have made IDEA almost unusable.

Eventually the only way to sort out the mess is to delete all the project files and the IDE directory in my $HOME and reinstall
The most recent update (end of November) has started to use 100% of all cores until I kill the IDE and restart it.
I waited patiently for things to improve over the last months, however things are going from bad to worse. Similar poor experience with eclipse Juno made me move to IDEA, I am now evaluating alternative IDE's.
emacs-lsp is a fairly strong contender at this stage.
These are not known issues. We'll be glad to help you if you could report them at https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/newIssue?project=IDEA . Sorry for the problems.
Having the same issues. Forgetting configurations and need to clear the cache and restart quite often to keep things going.
