Expand directory tree until contents of children are more than one

Answered

A project can have several directories that have a single subdirectory.

For example, one of my projects has the following structure:

project -> src -> main -> kotlin -> projectdir -> projectdir2 -> projectdir3 (contents of project are here)

I used to be able to expand the entire tree of subdirectories until hitting a subdirectory that has more than one files or subdirectories, simply by clicking on the root directory. I can't seem to be able to find the setting for this in the most recent version of idea. I currently need to expand each subdirectory until reaching the 6th one which contains the actual project files. How can I do this?

Settings (Preferences on macOS) | Advanced Settings | When collapsing a node, also collapse all expanded nodes under it.

This setting can affect the behavior you describe. If you disable it, it will not collapse the nodes under the main one and expanding the root node will automatically expand the nodes that were expanded under it.

Thanks Serge but this setting seems to be keeping a state of expanded nodes, so when I collapse the parent node and re-expand it, it returns to it's previous state. But this is not what I was looking for. In previous versions, expanding the parent node, would automatically expand all children, until a child contained either files or more than one directory.

Please share a sample project structure where this issue can be reproduced: https://uploads.jetbrains.com.
