The target for your app and the target for the unit tests can have different build settings. Base SDK does not affect the ability to launch the target on the device, but the "iOS Deployment Target"...

Please check that the iOS target device in the build settings of your project is compatible with the actual device that you are using. Also, makes sense to check the Xcode version selected in AppCo...

Thanks. This is strange, both builds render text exactly the same for me. Could you please check if the settings in Preferences -> Appearance & Behavior -> Appearance are the same?

Jan, could you please post the full information about the two builds that you are comparing, including the used JRE versions? You can find this information in AppCode -> About AppCode menu.
